I'm Alive

It started Wednesday night, I went to bed at my normal time, and my stomach was kind of feeling funky. I woke up at about 2:30am just throwing up everywhere. Because I get such bad migraines, I'm used to waking up and throwing up. I'm a pro at throwing up. I could puke on command if I needed to (I'm not sure why that skill would come into play, but just putting it out there..). At least when it's from my head, I know why I'm puking. Wednesday night, I had no idea why, but it was so bad. I couldn't get any sleep, every time I would start to maybe fall asleep, I'd have to run back into the bathroom. It was like that all night. On Thursday, I was still so sick, I had to call into work. In the almost three years I've been at this job, I've never had to call in for something that wasn't a migraine. I felt awful, but was sure it was just some 24 hour bug thats been going around. But Thursday night came and went, and Friday morning I was still throwing up. Didn't get any sleep still. I decided to go see my doctor, mostly because I needed a doctor's note for missing two consecutive days at work.

I figured, I'll go in, he'll tell me I have a stomach virus, tell me to drink fluids and send me back to my bed. Easy Breezy. But no. He poked around on my stomach and noticed I had more pain on my right side than my left, and saw how dehydrated I was and told me I needed to get myself to the hospital for a scan to make sure it wasn't appendicitis.

To the many doctors I know read this.. Telling a girl who hasn't slept or stopped throwing up in two straight days that she needs to get to the hospital tends to cause a mini-panic attack. Just FYI.

My husband took off work and took me up the ER, where we waited. And waited. And waited. Hmm, I thought that the doctor calling up the ER to tell them I would be on my way might have cut down some of that waiting time, but apparently not. They did all the usual stuff, put in an IV, took some blood, made me pee in a cup (not an easy task when you're severely dehydrated..), and sent me to get a cat scan. A horribly unpleasant cat scan. A "holy moly I've just been violated" cat scan. A scan that involves contrast put in your IV that makes you feel like you've piddled yourself, and contrast put in your booty. YES. For real. UNPLEASANT doesn't begin to cover it.

So after all that, the test comes back, and they can't find my appendix. I didn't ask at the time, because I didn't feel good and wanted to go home. Who likes being in the ER?! But since I've been home, I've been wondering why they couldn't find my appendix when they were specifically looking for it. Where did it go? Is it taking a tropical vacation without me? Did I puke it up? Did it take detour on its way to the mall and got lost? Seems very strange to me.. The ER doc didn't think it was appendicitis, like 95% sure it's not. So they sent me home with anti-nausea meds and some pain meds, and told me to watch it.

I'm totally watching for my appendix to show back up so I can give it a lecture about curfews and letting someone know where its going! It's not cool to make me worry like that, how would it feel if I just took off without it and didn't let it know when I'd be back. Jeez, organs these days..
